Climate, volcanism and bradyseism: environmental challenges for port cities on the ancient and modern Bay of Naples

The Bay of Naples, home to the Campi Flegrei and Somma-Vesuvian volcanic complexes, was an important maritime centre for ancient Rome. The area had few naturally occurring water sources, however, and provision of water supply was complicated by volcanic and seismic activity. Moreover, the climatic variability that likely affected the rise and decline of this area is poorly-known. My presentation shows the potential of calcium carbonate deposits formed in caves, wells and ancient water systems to investigate the relationship of these environmental factors to the history of this area, and also to predict future volcanic and seismic events.
