Computing Challenges Arising in Forward and Inverse Mantle Flow Simulation
I will review algorithmic challenges arising in the forward and inverse simulation of mantle flow problems. For the forward problem, crucial solver components for the arising nonlinear Stokes problems are parallel multigrid methods for preconditioning the linearized Stokes system, and a Schur complement approximation that is able to cope with extreme viscosity variations. I will also present inversion results for global rheology parameters and distributed fields from surface data in instantaneous mantle problems, and inversions for initial conditions from present-day temperature distributions in time-dependent problems. This is joint work with Johann Rudi and Omar Ghattas (UT Austin), Tobin Isaac (U Chicago), Vishagan Ratnaswamy, Dunzhu Li and Michael Gurnis (Caltech).
