Insight into Some Basal Animals from the Cambrian Chengjiang biota

Basal animal groups include Porifera, Placozoa, Cnidaria, and Ctenophora that diverged early during metazoan evolution. They are particularly significant in deciphering the early evolution and internal phylogeny of the kingdom Animalia. Among them, the fossil record of cnidarians and ctenophores in the early Cambrian Chengjiang biota (Yunnan, South China) has remained obscure or contentious during the past few decades. Based on new findings, I review the potential cnidarian affinity of some enigmatic forms from the biota, including Xianguangia sinica, Yunnanoascus haikouensis, and a new taxon Nailiana elegans gen. et sp. nov. In addition, I tentatively review the paleoecology and the early evolution of ctenophores in light of the extinct class Scleroctenophora foremost characterized by skeletonization.
