Adventures in the Land of the Serpentine

The serpentinization of ultramafic rocks has received increasing attention from scientists in recent years, in large part because the process generates molecular hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) that can support chemosynthetic microbial communities in surface and subsurface environments. Because production of hydrogen is linked to oxidation of iron, the distribution of iron among the product minerals is a key component in determining how much hydrogen is produced, but the factors that control how the iron is distributed among the product phases remains poorly understood. Although the serpentinization reaction principally involves only two reactant phases (olivine and orthpyroxene) and three product phases (serpentine, brucite, and magnetite), the process is actually highly variable and quite complex. I will present results of a series of laboratory experiments that focus on understanding the factors that control the distribution of iron and amount of hydrogen generated during serpentinization.
